Datadog Alternatives Ranked by Real Bills (Not Marketing)
What you'd actually pay on the eight most-deployed Datadog alternatives, calculated for a representative 30-host SaaS scanning 200 GB/month.
Datadog Alternatives Ranked by Real Bills (Not Marketing)
What you'd actually pay on each Datadog alternative, calculated for a single representative workload: a 30-host SaaS, 5M requests/day, 200 GB/month of telemetry, 4 engineers using the dashboards.
For more on the migration logic see the real Datadog bill post.
The reference workload
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Hosts | 30 |
| Requests/day | 5,000,000 |
| Trace data/month | 200 GB |
| Logs/month | 100 GB |
| Engineers using dashboards | 4 |
| Retention required | 30 days |
For comparison, the same workload on Datadog (basic APM + logs + ASM) costs roughly $5,000/month before optimization, $3,000/month after.
The ranked list (cheapest first)
1. Self-hosted SigNoz on AWS
Estimated bill: ~$300/month
Single ClickHouse instance on m5.large, 200 GB EBS, 30-day retention. The bill is infrastructure, not software.
Catch: ~1 engineer-day to set up, ~2–4 hours/month maintenance. Not free in time.
2. SecureNow
Estimated bill: ~$1/month (yes, one)
200 GB scanned at $5/TB. Free tier covers 1 GB/month, paid is per-TB. No per-host charges.
Catch: Currently Node-only. If your stack is multi-language, parts of it would need a different tool.
3. SigNoz Cloud
Estimated bill: ~$1,200/month
Hosted version of self-hosted SigNoz. Includes 30-day retention and HA.
Catch: Still per-host pricing, just at lower per-host rates than Datadog.
4. Dash0
Estimated bill: ~$1,500/month
300 GB ingest (200 GB traces + 100 GB logs) at $0.30/GB + small overhead. Predictable per-byte pricing with no per-host fees.
Catch: Newer tool, smaller community, fewer integrations than mature alternatives.
5. Grafana Cloud
Estimated bill: ~$1,800–$2,400/month
50 GB free, then $0.50/GB for logs and traces. Custom metrics and tracing add up. Per-user fees on the higher tiers.
Catch: Best dashboarding (it is Grafana). Three-product stack means three pricing axes to manage.
6. HyperDX Cloud
Estimated bill: ~$1,800/month
300 GB at $0.40/GB for trace data plus session-replay charges if used.
Catch: Best for frontend-correlation use cases; less of a price advantage in pure backend APM.
7. New Relic
Estimated bill: ~$2,400/month
Per-user pricing at $99/user/month × 4 users = $396 base. Plus ingest charges past the 100 GB free tier — about $2,000 for 300 GB.
Catch: Per-user model means giving more team members access (which is good practice) increases cost linearly.
8. Datadog (after optimization)
Estimated bill: ~$3,000/month
Down from ~$5,000 with sampling, smaller APM tier, and optimized log indexing.
Catch: This is what you're trying to leave.

What the SecureNow $1/month figure assumes
Important caveat: SecureNow's $5/TB scanned bills on data your queries actually scan, not data ingested. The $1/month assumes the workload's dashboards are looked at occasionally, not all day. For a SaaS with light dashboard usage (most), this is realistic. For a SaaS where dashboards are constantly queried (operational SOC, busy on-call), the bill scales with that usage — typically into the $50–$200/month range.
The point: usage-based pricing scales with value. Per-host pricing scales with infrastructure shape.
When the cheapest isn't the answer
A few places where the cheapest tool isn't the right choice:
Operational maturity matters more than $1k/month. A $1,500 tool that the team trusts and uses well is cheaper than a $300 tool that creates friction during incidents.
Single-vendor consolidation has value. If you'd add three other tools to fill gaps, a more expensive consolidated product is cheaper overall.
Multi-language stacks rule out some options. SecureNow is currently Node-only. If your stack spans Python, Go, Java, and Node, a multi-language tool is necessary regardless of price.
The decision framework
- Self-host candidate? SigNoz is the leader. ~$300/month + ops time.
- Node-heavy SaaS, want collapsed APM + security? SecureNow. ~$1–$200/month.
- Already love Grafana? Grafana Cloud. ~$2,000/month.
- Need predictable per-byte pricing? Dash0. ~$1,500/month.
- Multi-language, large team? New Relic, Datadog (negotiated). $2,400+/month.
For most teams under 200 engineers, option 2 or 4 wins on bill alone. Option 1 wins if you have engineering time. The choice between depending on operational fit, not price.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why these specific tools?
These are the eight that actually show up when teams migrate, ordered roughly by adoption. Not a ranked-by-feature list; this is ranked by what you'd pay.
Are these numbers exact?
Estimated for a representative workload. Your traffic profile may push numbers up or down 30–50%. The relative ordering is reliable.
Is the cheapest always best?
No. Cheap with bad UX or poor data integrity is more expensive in operational time. Use these numbers as one input alongside feature breadth and team fit.
